We best serve Christ by loving all!

From our Pastor

Dear friends,

Happy Eastertide! I hope and pray that as we celebrate this season, each one of you is able to catch glimpses of Resurrection Joy in your daily lives.

During the call process that brought me here to be your pastor, I noticed a recurring theme in our conversations: a desire to expand the church’s mission and get better in touch with the needs of the Taos community. Many of you have told me about this church’s rich past, and just as many of you have told me that you believe that it has a rich future as well.

Our job now is to listen to the whispers of the Holy Spirit, trusting that God will guide us into that future, even as we seek to discern just what that future looks like.

I propose that we start by looking inward. Our mission statement, “We best serve Christ by loving all!” is a wonderful theological statement. Called by God and claimed by Christ, we love all people, no exceptions. However, in order to do effective ministry, we’re going to have to start to get specific. I invite all of us, in the days and weeks to come, to reflect on the following questions:

In this particular time and place, what does it mean to “love”?
In this particular time and place, who are some of the people included in “all”?

Don’t worry about getting it right. We’re not looking for the “right” answer; we’re looking for God’s answer for us today.

As we begin this process of discernment, I am reminded of a quote by author and theologian Frederick Buechner:

“The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the
 world’s deep hunger meet.”

Friends, I am excited to explore those places with you, trusting that the God we know in Jesus Christ will faithfully lead us, together, through this journey.

Much peace to you all,
