ELDERS

“Elders… are persons with particular gifts to share in discernment of God’s Spirit and governance of God’s people… Ruling elders are so named not because of the “lord it over the congregation’ (Matt 20:25) but because they are chosen by the congregation to discern and measure its fidelity to the Word of God, and to strengthen and nurture its faith and life. Ruling elders, together with the pastor/teaching elder, exercise leadership, government, spiritual discernment, and disciple, and have responsibilities for the life of a congregation as well as the whole church, including ecumenical relationships.” –PC(USA) Book of Order, G-2.0301

At First Presbyterian Church of Taos, elders serve on session, the governing body of the church. Each elder serving on session also chairs or co-chairs one or more of the church’s committees, and thus serves in leadership related to worship, mission, fellowship, education, property, finance, or personnel. Elders share with deacons the logistical responsibilities of preparing for worship.

DEACONS

“The ministry of deacon as set forth in Scripture (Acts 6:1-6) is one of compassion, witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies or structures, or anyone in distress.” –PC(USA) Book of Order, G-2.0201

At First Presbyterian Church of Taos, deacons take the lead on spiritual and pastoral care in the church community. Each deacon keeps in touch with a designated “flock” of members and their immediate families, visits members who are ill or otherwise unable to participate in church life, and responds as resources are available to both the pastoral and practical needs of members of their flocks. Deacons also maintain the prayer list and prayer chain and share with elders the logistical responsibilities of preparing for worship.
